Earthquake and Senegal are the first Iberian lynxes released in the Algarve region.

Updated: Mar 24, 2022

The first Iberian lynx release to take place in the Algarve took place on the 27th February 2022, at 3:00 pm, in Alcoutim.

Earthquakes and Senegal, male and female, respectively, born at the Captive Reproduction Centre in El Acebuche, Andalusia. Seven years after the start of the reintroduction process, around 200 copies are now referenced, spread over a vast territory that extends between the municipalities of Serpa and Tavira.

One of the most relevant aspects of 2021 was the consolidation of the population in the Algarve, which already had about 20 copies and now adds 2 more: Earthquake and Senegal. During the last year, there were still 9 births in the Algarve region, and there is still a large territory that could be occupied by the species. The collaboration of owners and managers of farms and hunting areas has contributed to this very positive situation, sustainable management of the territory, the abundance of wild rabbits, a favourable attitude shown by the local population to the presence of the lynx and the connectivity of the lynx population in the Guadiana Valley with those present in other areas of Spain, essential for increasing genetic variability.
