Fuseta: finding your dream home on the edge of the Ria Formosa, Algarve

For those of you who haven't discovered Fuseta yet, we suggest you take some time out to discover this hidden gem. The location in our opinion is really quite unique and in this modern day and age, rare to find. If you are looking to buy a house in the Algarve within walking distance of the sea at an affordable price this could well be the answer to your prayers. Situated on the edge of the Ria Formosa, this charming working fishing village is still very much a hub of local fishing and is located just 20 km East of Faro, 12 km west of Tavira and only 9 km from Olhao. Fuseta is also just a 45-minute drive away from the Spanish border.

Drive into the village and you will be taken aback by how bustling it is and the choice of cafes and waterfront restaurants on offer where all the fish being grilled is fresh off one of the boats. Unlike other seaside villages in the Algarve, these restaurants remain open all year round. It won't take long for you to discover that throughout the village there are many restaurants and cafes that serve simple but very good food and if you are lucky enough to live here then the small but excellent municipal market is a great place for fresh fish, vegetables, and fruit: of course, almost all from local suppliers. There is a great selection of little shops, some supermarkets, and a regular flea market near the harbour. On summer´s evenings live bands play from time to time and the vibe is wonderful. There is no doubt Fuseta offers a superb mix of life: a good place for relaxing, soaking up the real Algarve but also a great place to meet people and get out and explore.

Fuseta is a small and very quaint fishing village and very much alive all year round due to the active community of local fishermen. This area is famous for the Salt Fields, and you can walk through the Rio Formosa for many miles in each direction. The area is ideal for nature lovers, walkers, and cyclists and for individuals and families who are looking to explore the unspoilt Algarve and experience true Portuguese life. For those loving water sports this is a popular spot for kite surfers and paddle board enthusiasts.

Walking from the old town you will find a lovely, gentle sandy beach which is particularly safe for children and during the summer season the ferry boats take you to the island “Ilha da Armona”. In the low season the Ria Taxi is available and when the tide is out you can walk across to the Island. Fuseta in fact has two beaches that you can choose from: The first is a small beach on the lagoon in the town itself. This Fuseta beach and when the tide is high it is great place to swim and then when the tide is out it is an ideal time for exploring the shore. Being in the lagoon and therefore away from the Atlantic waves it is very safe and popular with families. Fuseta's other beach is just across the lagoon on Ilha da Armona. At high tide, you can also swim here on the lagoon side without waves. The 'real' Fuseta beach is the ocean side. Close to the landing pier, the beach extends both ways for kilometres and you can walk for twenty minutes or more and explore as much beach as you wish. The other beauty of Fuseta is the train station which is situated close to the old town: you can go to Faro in one direction and Tavira and Vila Real de Santo Antonio in the other, near the Spanish border.
